With a name like Beach Read who could resist? I received this book as an add on for 9.99 USD in my Book of the Month July subscription box. Emily Henry is such a brilliant writer and really creates stories that suck you in right from the beginning.
The only other Emily Henry book I’ve read is A Million June’s and I absolutely loved it when I read it my Junior year of High School. But Beach Read? Gosh, I loved it even more.
The story follows January Andrews as she tries to navigate life in her father’s beach house in Michigan after his passing. Her father was cheating on her mother and secretly coming to the beach house instead of going on business trips like he said he was. He left the house for January when he passed away and soon after moving in for the summer she realizes her neighbor is her writing rival Augustus ‘Gus’ Everett. Soon they get into a competition between who can publish a book first. Can January write a sad ending to her book or Gus writing a happy ending in his first? The pair decide to work together to show one another how they would usually go about researching for a book.
The book was absolutely addicting. It was everything I’ve been looking for so far in 2020. I finished it in two days and wish it was longer. The ending was fantastic and the book was the perfect meld of happy, sad and sappy all in one. The characters are witty and have relatable personalities. It was really heartbreaking reading about January trying to let her father’s betrayal sink in. I could not put the book down! I will miss January, Gus (and another character who runs a bookshop cafe named Pete) very much!
I can’t wait to see what Emily Henry writes next. For now, you can pick up Beach Read here!
